DAY 6: Vegetarian South Indian Cuisine at MASALAA, 3140 S. Parker Rd., S. Parker Corridor

Last night, braving the sub-zero temperatures, My husband and I ventured across town to a strip mall at 3140 S. Parker Rd.
In that mall is MASALAA--yes, a highly recommended vegetarian Indian restaurant, focusing on the cuisine of South India. I have read that it is the only Southern Indian restaurant in the Denver area.

A small, very casual little spot, the service was excellent and prices are low.  We had no knowledge of Southern Indian food, but our waiter was great and had the patience to walk me through it.  I wish there was a take-out menu that I could scan and post here, because it's really extensive.  Trust me, it's extremely interesting and gives cause to come back a million times.
Appetizer: spinach and onion pakora (one we were sort of familiar with).  Fresh spinach and onion dipped in a LENTIL batter and deep fried.  Served with coconut chutney. Masalaa is not only vegetarian, with many vegan options, but also heavy on gluten-free, as their flours and batters are made of rice, lentils and some chick pea.
Not terribly photogenic, but most delicious:  a cilantro lemon soup (recommended by our waiter)
Our main dish: Mysore Thali.  Basically,a combo platter highlighting common foods specific to Southern India
The gigantic flat-bready-sort-of-thingy on top is a DOSA--huge crepes made of rice and lentil flour.  Masalaa showcases many varieties with different spices, fillings and chutneys.  This one was spiced with a red pepper mix and stuffed with curried potatoes.
Here's what was underneath the dosa:  UTHAPPAM-a pancake of rice and lentil batter, topped with tomato and cilantro; VADA-lentil flour doughnut; IDLY-steamed rice cake (I love these! I will learn how to make these at home)and various chutneys and a carrot/nut dessert. The menu at Masalaa has a wide assortment of Vadas, Idlies and Uthamppams.  Again, with a variety of fillings, toppings, etc.  The menu also carries a fascinating list of various vegetarian entrees, rices and a catagory called "From the Sea of Mumbai.." (of course, no fish) with other interesting unfamiliars. Must revisit!!
